The Ogdensburg Fire Department was organized in 1820 and a fire company formed in 1827. That summer, an engine house was built on a lot near the Academy (on Washington St.). The oldest hardware firm in Northern New York was the Patrick Hardware Co., now Hackett's Hardware. It was established in 1830. The first town and city hall was built in 1858, a red brick building at the corner of Franklin and Washington Sts. In 1878, it was sold to the school district for use as No. 2 Grammar School. The St. Lawrence Silk Co. operated for two years, 1919 and 1920. St. Lawrence State Hospital for the Insane was started in 1887.
