The old post office building was completed in 1869, built of Berea sandstone from Ohio, with the lower floor occupied by the Post Office, Customs
Department, Pension Office and the Revenue Department; and the second story by U.S. courtrooms. The roof, covered with Vermont slate, is supported by iron rafters and formerly supported a dome, 30 feet in diameter
with a spiral staircase leading to its observatory, 50 feet above.
